The Art Of Networking

Searching for employment entails more than simply sending out CV’s and filling out application forms. Learning the art of networking by building relationships and connections is the catalyst to excel and succeed in your chosen career path. Just 35% of job vacancies are advertised publicly which is testament to the huge opportunities that successful personal networking can present. In fact, the ability to network is the most powerful and influential marketing instrument that an individual can posses. Studies have found that 60% to 85% of people land new careers through networking.

Your personal network extends from family and friends to teachers and colleagues and doesn’t stop there. Networking is the art of using the contacts you have to generate further contacts in order to increase your career prospects. In the competitive job markets of the 21st century, networking is critical to establish business contacts, to provide access to industry knowledge and to generate opportunities for progression that otherwise would not have been available.

You can perfect your networking skills in many social and corporate situations. Whether it be at a work party, an educational class or a careers fair; they all provide the opportunity for you to meet new people and develop relations with those you already know. Ultimately, the aim is to create a lasting positive first impression of yourself and try to build rapport with the individual which over time will develop into a professional relationship.

“It’s not what you know, It’s who you know” has changed. Now, “It’s not who you know, It’s who knows you”!

5 Things To Remember..

1. Networking can be done anywhere with anyone
2. Prepare a good ‘elevator speech’ which essentially is a brief paragraph explaining who you are, what you do, and what type of career interests you (people can’t help you if they don’t know what you looking for!).
3. Fully research the career you wish to pursue. This can be accomplished through informational interviews with professionals in the industry – Everyone loves to be viewed as an expert and you will find most people will be more than happy to help.
4. Get yourself out there! Attend careers fairs, join professional associations and even make the most of informal social events to perfect your networking skills.
5. Remember to ask for business cards and contact information to keep in touch with people you meet. You should always follow up with an email or a phone call after you’ve met or if they have helped you. It shows you are grateful and will make them remember you.

So what are you waiting for? Start building your personal network today!
